London is a kind of negative of a donut as far as locating hotels is concerned. There is a huge cluster in the centre where the hole of the donut is, and then the ring that makes the donut is a negative space with few hotels within it, like specks of sugar on the ring. Outside the ring in the south eastern counties of England hotel supply is still low but begins to be more in line with demand. London suburbs however are a relative desert.

In January 2004 I went to Denmark to look at the refurbishment of the Arne Jacobsen Radisson SAS Royal Hotel. Whilst it is probable that little of that refurbishment will survive 50 years, much of the furniture, flatware etc. designed by Jacobsen for the original fit out remains in production.

As part of the three year £10.95m million programme to restore the Grade II listed Royal Hall at Harrogate, historic lighting specialist Dernier & Hamlyn manufactured light fittings that have been installed in various areas of the Hall including its famous 360º circulatory ambulatory. To ensure that the fittings created the right ambience for the spaces and were in keeping with the overall architecture, Dernier & Hamlyn, in partnership with M&E Engineers Max Fordham LLP and architects Burrell Foley Fischer LLP, developed designs by using photographs taken at the Hall�s opening in 1903.
