Hotel Design: First Butlins Hotel

Butlins, once associated with basic 1950s-style chalet breaks, is opening its first resort hotel. The £10m four-storey establishment will be officially opened on Tuesday on the site of the company's holiday resort at Bognor Regis in West Sussex.

Overlooking the sea, the hotel has 160 rooms, ranging from the standard variety, known as Hook's Cabins, to 15 luxury rooms called Nelson Staterooms. All rooms will be non-smoking with large windows, with the standard rooms having separate areas for children, with bunk beds.

At Tuesday's opening, Butlins will place an original chalet next to the hotel; however, some criticism which has (perhaps predictably) been attached to the new Hotel is a claim that the veteran accommodation resembles more of a garden shed than anything else.

If the Bognor hotel is successful, Butlins plans to open more hotels at its two other resort sites in England and is scoping out the possibilities at Minehead in Devon and Skegness in Lincolnshire.
