The Intercontinental Berchtesgaden Resort has developed a major spa as part of its attractions. As a part of this it has developed its pool for both leisure and as an exercise pool, and encourages the use of the pool outdoors all the year around.
Use of electronic doors is interesting between the pool inside and exterior, together with warm air blowers to maintain a draught free access.
In the photographs the development of the philosophy is clear. The poolside has been made wide enough to take sun loungers and larger seating areas including discreet four poster loungers etc. The fabric used to drape them has been used to make the light fittings at the side of the pool, and the whole environment has been treated in the same way as the spa.areas.
This air of luxury is not unusual in a poolside environment, and includes the towel and towel drop and other facilities that enable a guest to come down from their bedroom in the lift (which does not access the normal public areas of the hotel) in their gowns. The design is good, with the lift opening directly in front of the Spa Reception desk giving the whole area security.
The heating of the outside pool is varied with the seasons, the temperature lifting from the summer 33º to a winter 36º. Hot air blowers keep the cold winter air at bay from the indoor pool, and the access through the water is via electrically operated sliding doors controlled via a movement sensor.
