With consumer expectations rising, the pressure is on to achieve attractive bathroom design whilst battling against the spiralling costs of increasing regulation and constraints on space. Gill Few, Channel Manager at Kohler, discusses how bathroom manufacturers are offering their services to the hotel specifier to assist them in creating bathrooms and washrooms that add value, whilst being beautifully designed and built to perform.
“Along with hotel bedrooms, bathrooms have become one of the key selling propositions for the hotelier and a way in which to differentiate in a crowded market. However, for many the drive for efficiency in the fit-out process leads to a more standardised approach to specification. The results may not inspire the guest and could fail to maximize on possible revenue potential.
Bathrooms are an important focus of hotel design and at Kohler we understand the vital role that the bathroom plays in the guest’s experience. Guests expect to be wowed and want to be inspired to recreate the look in their own homes. Whether they are staying on business or pleasure, guests are looking for inspirational bathrooms, - a relaxing spa environment that is an ‘oasis away from ordinary life’. This calls for design-led products that make a luxurious experience out of something which is otherwise seen as functional, for example the use of feature vessels, deep and luxurious baths, and showers with state-of-the-art thermostatic controls ensuring constant water delivery at precisely the right temperature.
The further one moves towards the luxury end of the market, the greater the importance of design and offering pieces that help the designer to think about bathrooms emotionally and not just practically. After all, it’s about creating a sensory environment that exceeds expectations and stimulates the senses through the innovative use of materials, colour, texture and design.
Hotel design requires breadth and depth of range from which to specify and this means product designs ranging from ultra modern to classical or traditional and across all price points - everything from simplicity to pure indulgence. The role of the Kohler portfolio is to provide all the elements to make the hotel bathrooms something special, offering the specifier a host of design options and the inspiration to create something beautiful.
But looks alone are not enough; the bathroom must perform time after time. Many leading hotel groups are acknowledging the importance of overall bathroom presentation, where small imperfections can have a disproportionate effect on the guest experience. This means that pristine presentation is of paramount importance and manufacturers are responding to this with designs that don’t just look the part, but are easy to maintain and made to last. Kohler manufactures from the best materials, applies rigorous product testing and designs for performance day in, day out.
Kohler has set up a project support service to help specifiers select the most appropriate products for their project. The service provides a single contact point for advice, sales and technical information and brings together an extensive range of products to meet varying demands. From the essentials through to iconic statement pieces, in classical and contemporary designs and across all price points, everything can now be sourced from a single portfolio. A full pre and post specification service includes everything from detailed specifications and CAD drawings to installation and maintenance advice. These considerations are of particular importance in specifying products for bathrooms that will stay looking great in the years to come.
Kohler’s support service can also provide invaluable advice to designers regarding practical considerations that could affect their designs and product choices. With the vast majority of hotel and hospitality developments being refurbishments, designers are often bound within the constraints of an existing building. For example, there is a need to ensure adequate water pressure and supply of hot water for the newly fitted bathrooms, so as to avoid guest disappointment. Kohler’s expertise in this area enables us to advise specifiers on product suitability and system requirements to achieve the ultimate guest satisfaction.
Working in partnership, bathroom manufacturers and hotel specifiers can optimise spend and space usage and create maximum impact within these constraints without compromising on design aesthetics.”
