Miniview: Ashburn Hotel, a Boutique in Kensington, London

From as early as the 17th Century, Kensington (dubbed the ‘Royal Borough’) was popular with ‘persons of quality and note’ due to its proximity to the metropolis and royal residencies. Nottingham House, commissioned by King William III, was rebuilt by renowned architect Christopher Wren (who designed the Royal Chelsea Hospital where Decorex is held) to turn it into a fitting royal residence and in turn, developed the surrounding area by housing court officials, servants and followers. From this, the Victorians built grand terrace houses which have been successfully converted into hotels and guest houses to accommodate the millions of visitors who flock to South Kensington and Earl’s Court every year.

It is from one of these fine 19th Century London townhouses that the Ashburn Hotel is originated. Located on Cromwell Road, this boutique hotel is nestled close to a plethora of historical attractions and easy commuting distance to the City. The Ashburn offers a combination of characteristic design with the newest technology, an individually designed hotel which opened after a multi-million pound refurbishment in May 2007.

On entering the Ashburn Hotel, you are greeted by a small reception area with concierge desk and a large, almost floor-to-ceiling mirror. To the right is a large room housing the bar, lounge and flat screen TV. This reception area is decorated in what General Manager Lina Stahl describes as ‘the signature colour’ of the hotel – aubergine. The velvet sofa sits in prime position within the room in front of the large window, overlooking the main street. The curtains in this room are made and installed by Directory Company The Curtain Girls and frame the window perfectly. The green from the curtain blackout is highlighted with the use of fresh flowers and plants on small occasional tables around the room. The parquet flooring pulls together the different hues in the furniture, from the dark wood of the doors and bar front, to the lighter tones in the bar top and dining chairs.
