Interior Design: Tin Ceilings From Andy Thornton

Tin ceilings, like this one supplied by Andy Thornton to the award winning ‘One Up Bar & Grill’ in Glasgow, are proving extremely popular in hospitality and retail interiors in the UK. Originally developed as ornate ceiling decoration for bars and restaurants in America over 100 years ago, they impart a delicate and warm character to any interior.

As well as being attractive in their own right, the tiles have unique acoustic properties, helping to create atmosphere, and are particularly effective in buildings with high ceilings. They are easy to install, have good fire resistance and are low maintenance.

Andy Thornton Ltd are the exclusive distributors for the main US manufacturer of these tiles, which are still made on the original 100-year-old ‘Mammoth’ press, which uses 800 tons of force to ensure crisp definition and exquisite detail on each tile. The tiles can be used in their natural satin metal finish with a clear lacquer, or in any standard BS or RAL colour. They look particularly good in metallic and hammer finishes.
