Gold winner of the prestigious International Environment Awards 2007 for Environmental Best Practice, Managing Director, Brian Murray, met with councillor Knowles to explain how the company has implemented a three year improvement plan to tackle the issues that for many companies, create a negative impact on the environment.

Councillor Knowles was also impressed to hear how the company reuse its customers' old chairs by paying to recycle them for use in local good causes and third world education projects.

Head of Operation, Virginia Seaward who designed the companywide plan explained how she had recently worked with the national Green Standards charity and personally helped to install recycled Boss Design chairs into an orphanage in Cameroon.

The Boss Design journey to sustainability is a fantastic example of a socially responsible local company demonstrating that it cares about the future of the planet. The company clearly illustrates that even the smallest of actions can make a big difference.

Virginia explains;

'By monitoring what we do as a business, we were able to identify large and small areas for environmental improvement and then introduce best practice to help improve our environmental performance'.

She adds;

'Simply turning thermostats down by one degree helped reduce gas energy consumption by eight percent. This example is only one of over thirty initiatives that we have introduced over the past couple of years'.

The company which produces in excess of 200,000 units a year and employs over 170 people over its Boss and Komac operations is a fantastic local example of a manufacturer wanting to do the right thing for its employees, clients and the wider community. It also demonstrates a determination to remain a sustainable company in today's ever changing commercial climate.

Councillor Knowles commented;

'The company is already a cut above many in this field and yet insists that there is scope to make further improvements. Boss Design is a great example of a local company with a long-term vision. My visit was not only informative but very interesting and enjoyable too.'

He concludes;

'I hope that other companies are able to take a lead from the Boss example and I look forward to hearing about the future positive impact of Boss Design on the environment.'
