Radisson SAS Waterfront Jersey finally opens

If you think Terminal 5 is an outrageous example of the poor planning regime in the UK, then you will be astonished how long it has taken the island of Jersey to realise the new Radisson SAS Waterfront Hotel in St. Helier, Jersey.

The site of the hotel is on reclaimed land on the waterfront in St Helier. The site has seen a long drawn out battle between those who saw this as a site for social housing and those who sought the regenerative affect of a new hotel there. For over ten years the battle has raged, enabling hotels such as Hugglers the Club and Seymour Hotels Pomme d’Or to upgrade and improve their provision to provide competitive alternatives before the new hotel even got its doors open.

Sitting on the promenade, the Radisson SAS Waterfront Hotel, Jersey boasts an extensive view over the stunning Elizabeth Marina, Elizabeth Castle and St Aubin’s Bay. Within close proximity of the financial district and the bustling town centre, the hotel adds another venue to Jerseys struggling hotel market, and will inevitably impact on other hotels on the island, especially when backed by the marketing weight of one of Europe’s most successful operators in Radisson. In the 1980’s there were over 26,000 bedrooms on the island, but now this has diminished to less than 9,000 as the cost of competitive holiday rates in sunnier climes elsewhere has reduced visitor numbers.

The initial brief from the client was the requirement for a light and airy environment. Designers Scott Brownrigg had to ensure that the interior design references did not distract from the beautiful views. Working in sympathy and harmony with the surrounding area, using colour and textural references to develop the interior finishes enabled the spaces to be unfettered, buoyant, peaceful and calm. A colour scheme was created around simple colour palettes, resulting in a clean contemporary look.

Carpets use references to the sea, such as ripples on the water with stylised seaweed, stripes on canvas deck chairs and used inspiration based on a sea horse to deliver strong colour and pattern. The views however were paramount to the client. This manifests itself in the feeling that as you enter the reception you are drawn through the space making it feel larger than it is and are ‘wowed’ by the enormous fish tank.

The dining area accentuates the ‘sea horse’ inspiration for the carpet with striking smoke grey/blue colours picked out in the chairs, tables and walls and with elegant smoke grey glass sliding doors, dividing the room into sections. There is an exterior terrace where there is a brighter and more dramatic feel using bright blue and orange polypropylene chairs.

The ‘sea’ inspired carpet, which is continued in the hotels 195 bedrooms and suites, has ripples of the sea in beige, with waves of maroon and blue. The long corridors have been enhanced with a bold ‘squiggle’ of dark red seaweed influenced pattern. The bedrooms and suites are equipped with high quality amenities such as flat screen LCD televisions, free high speed internet access and individual climate control. The concrete pod bathrooms were supplied by Directory Company E. J. Badekabiner.

The hotel boasts five elegant meeting rooms – catering for over 400 theatre style and up to 280 banqueting. The versatile space can also be divided into smaller meetings and events space that benefit from a break out area situated in an interestingly shaped curved glazed area. The breathtaking boardroom on the 5th floor of the hotel prides itself in its large curved window spaning the width of the room and providing spectacular views across the marina and coastal line.
