Internet Hotel Reservations Up 75%

TravelCLICK surveys the use of the web by major different hotel brands across the world. It reports that the use of the web for reservations was up by 75% in 2002 against the same measures for 2001. Most of this gain was posted using the hotels own branded websites.

The Survey is a quarterly benchmarking report by that allows hotel chains to track booking performance on the Internet. It demonstrates the continued dramatic growth of electronic hotel bookings.

The 33 major chain and brands participating in this survey reported that 13% percent of their total CRO reservations were received from their brand Web site in 2002 (i.e. marriott.com, hilton.com, etc.), while six percent of all reservations were sourced from third party Internet sites. Less than half, or 42%, of reservations were made via phone to the CROs.

The report shows (2001 figures in brackets)
Third Party Website (Lastminute.com etc) 6% (4%)
Hotel Branded websites 13% (8%) giving Total bookings via the web, out of all bookings, at 19% (12%). The move away form web bookings via placing rooms with late booking web companies is a responce to the downward effect this had on the REVPAR achieved, and shows hotels regaining control of their pricing.

GDS Travel agents dropped to 39% (42%), giving bookings electronically at 58% (54%). Again this looks to be a refdlection of the way in which the web has enabled individual travellers and comapnies to book directly with their chosen hotel group. This also points up the need for locations (towns, resorts etc,) to have sites that provide access easily to their local hotels , and that those sites then have proper funcionality to allow the customer to complete the transaction on-line.

Voice bookings were 42% (46%)

Hoteliers should note this fast growth, and encourage it in the design of their websites (see article in this magazine of 28th April)
