Claridge’s Goes Green With Energy-Saving Lightbulbs From Lyco

Claridge’s of Mayfair in London, one of the world’s most luxurious 5-star hotels, is switching to energy-saving light bulbs with the help of Lyco.

The hotel has 203 bedrooms - 67 suites -, 4 restaurants/bars, a ballroom and 7 banqueting and private rooms. All have non-standard light fittings – many Victorian or Art Deco.

Claridge’s’ ‘Green Team’ submitted the hotel to Lyco’s Lighting Audit to ascertain potential energy savings with Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFL) and the role they can play in reducing the hotel’s carbon footprint. Lasting up to 8 times longer than traditional bulbs, these save energy and bulb replacement time.

Primary consideration was given to all public areas and the bedrooms with a view to maintaining aesthetic appeal and the light quality – a challenge given that each individual bedroom has different fittings and shade sizes. Following the Audit, Lyco’s Long Life Candles were used in the public areas where lighting is on 24hrs a day while small Micro Low Energy lamps were substituted in the bedrooms.

Mark Gilham, Assistant Chief Engineer said: “So far 150 bedrooms and the corridors now have CFL and guests haven’t complained – other areas are next.” So far energy savings will be around £3,500 per year with more to come.

Claridge’s are now also exploring Lyco’s energy saving dimmable solutions for their many glorious chandeliers e.g. (unshaded) the Osram Clear Low Energy Candle (Lyco product no. 10031/33), and (shaded) the Megaman 15000-hour Dimmable Candle (product no. 71172).
