I’ve no idea what they did with my car at the Amigo. I didn’t see it after I arrived until I was ready to leave, when there it was, at the front door. I don’t know where it went, but I didn’t need it – the location of the hotel fits all three of Mr. Hiltons’ strictures: location, location, and location. Right behind the Grand Place, reputedly one of the oldest squares in Europe, the hotel looks onto the rear of the old Town Hall. Walking Brussels is a delight and the hotel is beautifully placed for this. The discreet manner with which the hotel made my car vanish was the hallmark of service, a service the hotel expertly delivered throughout, as one would expect from hoteliers as experienced as the Forte family.

...allied to quality of service, an oasis of taste in a world of vulgarity

Unlike many minimalist hotels, the Amigo does not seek to impose itself on you, but quietly and unfussily creates an oasis of style, luxury and calm in the city. In some ways it is predictable, but for five star hotels predictability, if allied to quality of service and interior, is preferable to a challenging stylistic exercise. However quiet and unfussy can also be stylish as the awards being garnered by this hotel show. Designers RDD and Olga Polizzi have jointly created an oasis of taste in a world where the shock of vulgarity is often mistaken for the shock of the new. Simon Rowel of RDD has pushed the design whilst Olga Polizzi and Rocco Forte have batted for the hotelier. The creative synergy of the two parties to the design has created stronger interiors than a lesser partnership would have achieved together.
