Like the bedrooms the public areas use natural materials. Stone is pale limestone or cream marble, contrasted with dark timber and leather to create an aura of quality and comfort, whilst lighting is effective in providing sparkle and drama throughout the spaces as well as softer local highlights. The use of timber or stone flooring and contemporary rugs emphasising the cool modern nature of the environment created for the guest. Modern sculpture adds to the feeling of modernity without being strident or dominating the interior. Indeed if there is a dominating characteristic it is the way the space planning allows public areas to be flooded with natural light, the strong sunlight casting powerful shadows across floors breaking up the spaces and providing plenty of visual interest.
Detail design is thoughtful, occasionally witty. Room numbering for example is provided by a small shelf at waist height outside the door. The shelf houses a down lighter that lights the base of the room door whilst its side displays the lit number and its top surface is large enough to accommodate a room tray. The room numbers provide light for the corridors in appropriate places and highlight the bedroom door locations.

The large lobbies are provided with mirrors and seating to give a focal point on leaving the lift, as well as often containing large artworks linked to the location. Corridors are kept short due to the plan form of the island site
Situated in one of the primary business areas of Istanbul the hotel is adjacent to the new subway and bus stations as well as on the main road to the city centre (you wouldn’t believe how many cars a city of 12 million + people has on its roads at the same time!) and the concept of a business boutique seems well thought through and popular. The public areas have achieved a popularity I have only previously seen in a ‘W’ bar and restaurant in New York, or in London's Met bar, maybe helped on my stay by the presence of a local team of soccer heroes staying in the hotel.
With Swiss quality, and Turkish friendliness combined in personal service it also gives the terms ‘Business Boutique’ a performance yardstick for competitors to measure themselves against. That it is in Istanbul simply adds a layer of eastern promise to the mix.
