The building is contemporary from the outside, and the atrium feels very stylish and modern. However the bedrooms and the railings to the corridors are less surely handled. The ironwork of the handrails is almost Victorian in character and sits uneasily below the atrium metalwork, particularly on the upper floors where a comparison is invited. The pure functionalism of the atrium steel structure could have found an echo in a more modern treatment of the handrails, which might also have given the designer the opportunity to avoid the uncomfortable detailing of the wooden handrail itself on top of the ironwork.
Some of the smaller set piece cameo seating areas are stylishly done and it is a pleasure to find the designers recovering their confidence in the treatment of the for the Sports Bar. Formulaic it may be, but it still feels stylish and its outside dining area is not only stylish but the canopy allows diners to ignore the summer showers whilst still enjoying the fresh air. The interface between the contemporary exterior canopy and the bar itself is handled well and the exuberance of the treatment of the bar interior carries conviction and is fun. Uncertainties only appear where the designer is trying to create a cool interpretation of more classical design cues in other areas of the hotel.

The triangular site is cramped but well located and the outside area of the Sports Bar makes good use of a section of the site that is tapering and narrowing. Across the road is the Vistula, and the centre of town is a short walk away. Hemmed in by older buildings the hotel makes effective use of the ground and its integral car park gives a raised platform improving the exceptional views from most of the bedrooms, as well as giving an unusual secure hotel car park, a rare place in Krakow which is beginning to experience traffic problems as the number of tourists continues to increase beyond the three million mark.
With all its rooms full in the summer the hotel is looking to sell its conference and business meeting facilities in the off season months. Krakow is charming in the Summer, and I would think it takes on a fairy tale beauty in winter snows. This hotel offers well appointed well designed rooms and a combination of friendly efficient service with very good food and wine, and will grace the Starwood folio profitably as well as attractively.
