the Big Sleep, May 2007

The use of Formica with a mirror finish, and the overall layout of the room were creative and original. Even here, with the upmarket bathroom having a freestanding soaking bathtub, double wash-handbasin, the same curtain and chair combination ensured a continuity of style with the rest of the hotel. In another suite the richer darker browns contrasted with the pale colours used through the rest of the hotel and with this simple twist created a different identity for the room without moving away from the overall design concept of the rest of the building.

The simplicity and integrity of the design approach shows in the signage, and in areas such as the ironing room, where a simple functional space has a design sensibility in the spacing of the ironing boards and the positioning of the irons.

With a recent survey showing that whilst in general satisfaction with hotels is rising, the number of complaints about the budget hotels sector is increasing, innovative operators with a strong sense of style such as the Big Sleep bring new pleasure to the budget traveller.

"Created with wit, paying homage to a design past... the Big Sleep gives lessons in intelligent design to other more august operators."
Overall the level of design is good, with the result being clean crisp interiors. Created with wit, paying homage to a design past and making imaginative use of materials, all whilst ensuring the overall design feel and philosophy is carried throughout the building, the Big Sleep gives lessons in intelligent design to other more august operators.
